What condition are your floors in?
The average person walks 3,000 to 4,000 steps a day. While children, and active adults, can easily walk 10,000 steps or more. Foot traffic, pets, and crazy food messes; floors put up with quite a bit.
If you want to keep your floors looking fresh and happy, you should learn how to make floor cleaner at home. Commercial cleaners don’t always contain the right ingredients, plus they can be costly. Save time and money by taking the fate of your floors into your own hands.
How can you make a floor cleaning solution that works? Read on to learn all about DIY floor cleaners.
How to Prepare the Cleaning Space
Before you can learn how to make floor cleaner, you’ll first need to prep your cleaning space. Get all of the shoes, rugs, and furniture out of your way.
Are you hiring a warehouse floor cleaning service? Then you’ll want to prepare the space by removing any machinery that might be in the way.
Take a moment to sweep over the tiles or hardwood floors, collecting any loose dirt or sand. Go over the floor again with a vacuum; that way, you can be sure you get all of the debris.
Sticky Spots
Are you noticing sticky spots of residue on your tile floors? Grab a plastic putty knife and begin gently scraping off any residue you find. Once the residue is all scraped up and the dirt is gone, you can apply the cleaning solution.
Ceramic Tile Floor Cleaner
To clean tile floors you’ll first need a bucket filled with hot water. Add in half a cup of vinegar and half a tablespoon of dish soap.
Don’t overdo it on the dish soap. Putting in too much dish soap makes your floors look dull because of the soapy residue.
Once you have your cleaning solution ready to go, you can get your mop. Rinse the mop out thoroughly under hot water. The hot water will help wash away any debris caught in the mop.
Generously spread the cleaning solution around the floor as you mop. Then empty out your bucket and fill it back up with hot water. Towel dry your floors and mop them again with the plain hot water.
Instead of letting the floors air dry, we suggest using a large towel again to get up any remaining water. By drying the floors yourself, you’ll be able to get up more dirt while also preventing water spots from appearing.
Effective Wood Floor Cleaner
You shouldn’t use the same cleaning solution on wood floors. Instead, you’ll want to make a special solution that’s a little more gentle.
Here are a few different recipes you can choose from when creating a wood cleaning solution:
- Essential oil scented cleaner
- Water and vinegar solution
- Vegetable oil cleaner
- Olive oil and lemon juice cleaner
- Black tea cleaner
- Plant-based soap cleaner
- Dish detergent solution
If you want a mild cleaning solution, check out the water and vinegar mixture. Water and vinegar do an excellent job of cutting through any type of grime sitting on your hardwood floors.
Just combine 1 gallon of warm water and 1/2 cup of distilled white vinegar. You can use a sponge or a mop for this effective cleaning solution.
If you want something with a better scent, try making an essential oil scented cleaner. Essential oils provide an aromatic experience that’s completely natural! We suggest using lemon essential oils mixed with orange since they’re a great mood booster.
Spot Cleaning Solutions for Carpets and Rugs
Homemade carpet cleaners can also be the perfect solution when you need to spot treat your carpet. If you don’t want to buy a lot of ingredients, you can start off with the basic solution of baking soda, vinegar, and salt.
In a gallon of warm water, mix together half a cup of vinegar, a quarter cup of baking soda, and 3 tablespoons of salt. Your vinegar cleaning solution will be mild and significant for day-to-day keep up.
Use your vinegar spot cleaning solution on carpet spots, rugs, and floor mats too. If there’s any leftover solution, store it for later use. The solution doesn’t go bad as long as you keep it in a cool, dark storage area.
Deep Carpet Floor Cleaner
When you’re looking for a more intense cleaner, we suggest using hydrogen peroxide instead. You’ll need 1 gallon of warm water and 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. You’ll also need 1/8 cup of dish soap, half a cup of fabric softener, and a funnel for the hydrogen peroxide solution.
Pour all of the ingredients into a large gallon jug using your funnel. You can fill the remainder of the jug with extra warm water. Now fill up your carpet cleaning vacuum reservoir with warm water and 2 oz of your homemade solution.
Start cleaning your carpets according to the carpet cleaning machines instructions. Then, put the remainder of your solution wherever you’d like in the house!
Scented Solutions
Does your carpet have a strange smell? Then you’ll want to make a deodorizing carpet powder to sprinkle on after cleaning.
All you’ll need for your deodorizing carpet powder is 1/2 cup of baking soda and 5 drops of essential oils. If you have a larger home, you can double the recipe.
We suggest using lavender as your essential oil since it has a calming effect. Generously sprinkle your deodorizer around the house, letting it soak into the carpet’s fibers.
After about 15 minutes, you can vacuum up the carpet. Everything will look fresh and smell incredible.
