Every year, people decide to change locations and find a new home. In fact, in the United States, 27.1 million people moved houses last year.

Moving to a new home can be very stressful, especially for those doing it independently.

However, knowing the proper steps to take can make the process smoother overall.

Keep reading if you’re interested in learning about the steps to take when moving house!

    Find a New Location

The first step to moving home is figuring out where you’d like to live next. Relocating is a huge commitment that must be thought through.

If you’re only making a residential move, this process will be much less stressful. Begin looking for a home in your current city by checking out neighborhoods. Driving around will be a great help as you can see which homes are for sale and which areas you like most.

Moving to a new city may be difficult since you can’t view most things beforehand. Make a trip to the locations you’re interested in and settle on a place you really enjoy. A realtor may be of great help since you do not yet live in the area.

    Look For a Job

Employment is an important aspect to remember, especially when relocating to a new city. You must try to have a job lined up before making a move for financial safety.

While visiting the area, start inquiring about job openings. Visit these employment places to get a better idea of their business. If it seems like a good match, speak with the manager about the employment opportunity.

As your move gets closer, you can start applying for these roles. It’s a good idea to have a few options lined up if any fall through.

Remember to explain your moving situation to the hiring manager. If you’re what they’re looking for, they should have no problem waiting a few days for the final interview.

Put Your Current Home on the Market

Now that you have your new location picked out and employment set up, it’s time to put your home on the real estate market. You can list the house yourself or use a realtor.

A realtor will help take the stress away and handle negotiations for you. Usually, you’ll get the most money out of your home this way. However, listing the house yourself will save you money with no realtor fees or commission.

Before you list, try making sure there are no significant damages to the home. Make the necessary repairs, so interested buyers are not concerned about the home’s state.

    Find a New Home

Once you’ve listed or sold your current home, you can start looking for a new one to buy. Start by creating a list of “must-haves” for your new home. This list will help you narrow down options that will not meet your needs.

Then you can start researching neighborhoods for safety, location, and aesthetics. Of course, the nicer the area, the better.

Once you’ve narrowed down your options, start making in-person visits to each. This will give you a better idea of the setup and if you’d like to live in it.

    Hire Movers

After making your new home choice, you can begin hiring professional movers. These movers will take care of all your heavy lifting, transport, and unloading of your things.

Always research different moving companies to find a reputable company to work with. Go online and look up reviews and choose the business with the most positive rating.

Keep in mind that you’ll want to hire a company that offers moving insurance. This is especially important for those moving long distances.

    Declutter Your Current Home

Before you begin packing, you must declutter your current home. This will help eliminate unneeded things that will make your new home untidy.

Go through each room and place unused, broken, or unwanted things in a pile. This pile can then be divided into a throw-away pile and a donation pile. Helping the less fortunate is a great way to utilize things you’ve outgrown or forgotten about.

    Begin Packing

After getting organized, the packing process will begin. You’ll need to get packing boxes, tape, and packing peanuts to store everything correctly.

Go room by room and pack things based on similarities. For example, all clothes should go in the same boxes, and all bedding should go in another.

Don’t forget to label each box with its contents. This labeling system could save lots of time when looking for specific objects in your new home.

    Double Check Closing

Before the move, you’ll need to check the closing status of your new home. Any unexpected issues can occur, pushing your date back.

Often, the title company can become delayed, repairs must be done, or there are paperwork issues. Ask for permission to move so that you don’t arrive too early.

    Tie Up Loose Ends

Once you get the okay to move in, you must tie up any loose ends you had at your previous home. This is an essential step to avoid being overcharged or fined.

Cancel utilities on the last day you stay to ensure your bills don’t keep running. Turning off water and electricity is also a safety precaution as no one will be residing in the house for a bit. Additionally, don’t forget to change your address so that mail is only being sent to your new home.

    Steps to Moving House

Hopefully, moving house will be easier for you now that you have this helpful checklist.

After the move, you’ll be settling into your new residence in no time.
