Bettas are among the most beautiful fish you can own. They’re also one of the most sensitive. These fish require exacting conditions to thrive, which is why many people wonder if it’s even safe to touch bettas. Unfortunately, their small size and delicate features make them prone to infection from human hands or anything that isn’t specifically designed for them like other pet fish. However, with the right precautions in place, it is possible to safely interact with a jv betta fish in your home.

What makes Betta fish so sensitive?

Betta fish are part of the labyrinth fish family, which means they obtain oxygen from the air, as well as from the water. Because of this, betta fish are extremely sensitive to oxygen levels, water temperature, and more. This means, to keep your betta in optimal health, you need very clean water, the right temperature, and a tank that’s aerated and filtered to remove any contaminants. Instead of adapting to these conditions, betta fish could develop bacterial or other infections that can be fatal.

How to safely interact with a Betta Fish

First, wash your hands. Bacteria from your hands can easily get into the water and kill your fish, so begin with that first. Bettas do not have scales like other fish, so instead have a very thin, almost skin-like layer that protects them from infection. This means your pet fish is more vulnerable to infection from human hands, clothing, or anything else that isn’t specifically safe for bettas. Because of this, it’s important to take precautions when interacting with your betta fish.

Tips for petting and playing with your betta

For starters, avoid letting your betta fish out of its tank or another secure containment area. Even in a closed bowl or aquarium, betta fish are still at risk of infection. And while many betta fish owners love to pet and hold their fish, this can be very dangerous for them. For example, certain types of jewellery can transfer bacteria that can be fatal to bettas.

Even your natural oils can be a risk and they can linger on your hands and clothing long after you’ve touched your betta. Also, bubblers and other aquarium filters can easily suck up your pet fish if you put it in the water.

Is It Safe to Hold a Betta?

For most betta owners, it is not safe to hold your fish. While some bettas will adapt to being held, others will be stressed by the sudden change and drop in water temperature. Holding a betta is something only experienced betta owners should do. If you’re not sure if your betta is tolerant of being held, try it with a net or scoop. Many bettas will adapt to being held and petted with gentle, slow movements. Holding your betta too long is a risk, just like with any other pet.

Why Are Betta Fish So Sensitive?

Many people wonder why such a beautiful fish is so sensitive. There are a few reasons why betta fish require such careful care. First, betta fish are easily stressed by changes in their environment. This is especially true with water temperature and quality. Betta fish are tropical fish, which means they thrive in warm water between 76 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

Holding your aquarium at an ideal temperature is key for keeping your betta alive and happy. Second, betta fish are prone to disease. This is true even in the best conditions, where betta fish can easily catch parasites or other infections. This doesn’t mean your betta will die if you don’t do everything right but it does mean they need special attention.

    Conclusion

Betta fish are incredible pets, but they’re also some of the most finicky fish you can own. That’s why it’s important to follow the right procedures when interacting with your betta fish. From washing your hands to keeping your water temperature warm, you can make your betta more comfortable and happy. Betta fish are beautiful and exotic, but they’re also delicate and require careful care to thrive.
