Can Teeth Whitening Be Harmful For Your Teeth?

Teeth whitening is a popular dental procedure to get whiter teeth quickly. There are various ways to whiten your teeth. You can use an at-home kit, whitening strips from the pharmacy, or get it done professionally at bethesda cosmetic & general dentistry. While the at-home kit option is more time-taking, it is affordable. On the other hand, professional teeth whitening is a bit on the pricey side but shows instant and long-lasting results.

Many people who already have teeth whitening or are considering it wonder whether it has any harmful effects. The rule is everything should be done in moderation. Excess of anything can be harmful to your body. The teeth whitening procedure uses chemicals that are completely safe when used in the correct amount. Otherwise, it can have harmful effects.

    Is teeth whitening safe?

The bleach used for teeth whitening contains peroxide, which can damage the cells, blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves of the tooth. It should be used in the correct amounts to avoid problems like tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.

When used in excess amounts, whitening chemicals can damage the tooth enamel and expose the dentin. This is why you may experience tooth sensitivity if you get teeth whitening done frequently.

The good news is that discomfort from teeth whitening subsides within two days. To relieve the symptoms of tooth sensitivity after teeth whitening, follow these measures:

    • Brush with sensitivity toothpaste.
    • Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles.
    • Drink room temperature food and drinks and avoid too hot or cold ones.
    • Take over-the-counter painkillers for relief.

If you have a poor dental health condition, such as cavities, worn down enamel, or exposed roots, your dentist may not recommend teeth whitening as the chemicals can harm you even more.

Steps to whiten your teeth safely

By keeping a few safety measures in mind, you can whiten your teeth without damaging them.

    1. Consult with your dentist before choosing to whiten your teeth. Take expert opinion to determine whether the procedure is correct for you, which approach you should choose, etc.
    2. If you choose an at-home kit or whitening strips, look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval before buying the product. The seal ensures that the product is safe and effective. You can also ask your dentist for a recommendation.
    3. Follow your dentist’s instructions no matter what. If you get an in-clinic treatment, you should follow your dentist’s advice on post-whitening care. If you are using a store-bought product, follow the instructions on the package.

Following a proper oral care regime after teeth whitening allows you to retain the results of your investment for longer.
