Should You Use a Cleanser If You Have Rosacea?

Having rosacea can be difficult. It is a skin condition that can flare up and cause burning and red skin, as well as cause uncomfortable bumps. Sometimes, you can feel like you have the condition under control. Then, something can make rosacea flare up, and it can be unpredictable as to how long you will experience the side effects.

Many people are still learning what can cause the flare-up on their skin. For some, it can be stress or certain foods. For others, it can be the type of skin products they use. A common question is; should you use a cleanser if you have rosacea? Let’s take a look.

    Cleanse on a Daily Basis

Let’s simply answer the question. Yes, it is recommended that you still cleanse your face if you have rosacea. This should be done twice a day. But, you do not want to be rough with your skin. Instead, you should be very gentle on your skin in the morning and evening. The last thing you want to do is irritate the skin through rough movements and scrubbing.

The purpose of cleansing in the morning and at night is to help keep the skin fresh and clean. In other words, this removes any dirt and oil that might be present on your skin and that can irritate. Using a circular and gentle motion is best. You also want to use lukewarm water for cleansing.

Always ensure that you remove all of the cleanser from your skin. You can then pat your face dry using a soft cotton towel. Again, being gentle is key to keeping rosacea at bay and not inflaming the skin.

    Choose a Cleanser Carefully

If you do have rosacea, you do have to be careful when you are buying a cleanser. In particular, you need to make sure that it is going to be gentle on your skin. For example, Frezyderm has a wash that is for normal and sensitive skin. In particular, it states that it can be used if you have rosacea-prone skin too. It contains ingredients that are known to soothe and hydrate, which is exactly what you want.

Therefore, always read the cleanser carefully before using it. Make sure that it mentions sensitive or rosacea-prone skin. Something that you want to do is avoid soap and choose a mild cleanser. If you notice that a product is causing itching or redness, make sure that you stop using it straight away. This can avoid further irritation.

There are some basic ingredients that you should look for and avoid if you have this skin condition. Try to avoid products with alcohol in it, as well as any fragrance. In addition, glycolic acid can cause irritation in high amounts, plus lactic acid and menthol. Some people are different and these ingredients do not cause flare-ups. But, for others, they can be very bad. You can always test the new product on your skin to see if it is going to be a problem for you.

    Other Tips for Rosacea

There are many other things you can do if you have rosacea, which can avoid the burning, redness and pain that you can experience. Here are some other tips to help you.

    Use Lukewarm Water

When you are washing your face, you also need to be careful with the temperature of the water. For example, cold water might feel refreshing. But, it is not the best for getting dirt off the skin. In addition, if the water is too hot, it can dry up the skin and this can cause irritation to rosacea.

    Always Moisturise

Along with cleansing your skin, it is recommended that you moisturise too. This is going to help to keep the skin hydrated. When there is moisture, this can avoid irritation and also mean there is less itching. With any product you use on your skin, you want to take a look at the ingredients carefully and choose one that is suitable for rosacea.

    Use Sunscreen

It is thought that being in the sun can cause a rosacea flare-up. In other words, this can happen if you are not wearing sunscreen. So, during the summer and when it is hot outside, make sure that you are protecting your skin. This means using a sunscreen lotion for sensitive skin or a moisturiser that has SPF in it. Again, make sure that you choose products that are recommended for skin with rosacea.
