Close to India and Sri Lanka, in South Asia, is the Maldives. It is an archipelago of many islands but of all, there are only about 200 occupied. The capital of this Indian Ocean republic, the least populated country in Asia and the least populated of all Muslim countries, is Malé. Thus, this city must be one of the smallest capital cities in the world even though a third of the total population of Maldives lives there.
Contrary to the rest of what one sees in the country in Malé there are tall buildings, paved streets, shops, and offices. It is also a tourist city since it has its tourist circuit (it must be remembered that it was a Portuguese, Dutch and English colony). For example, we can visit the old bazaar. If we like to haggle and buy, this is one of the best places because practically everything is sold. The streets are narrow and full of stalls, only one car can pass at a time, but it’s worth it. Unfortunately Male does not have natural beaches although there are boardwalks from where we can contemplate the sea and an artificial beach development that is near the port, to the southwest of the island and that is one of the most popular places when one seeks to escape the heat.
Male is a relatively quiet and green city. The residential areas have many trees and in some streets, their tops meet at the heights forming arches. The visit to Male also includes the fish market and the local market that is always set up facing the sea, the new port, the palace of Sultan Mohamed Shamsuddeen III built-in 1906, the Edwardian-style National Museum with its beautiful collection of royal objects, and the 400-year-old mosque. In addition, there are a series of small parks where we can sit and watch the daily life of the citizens, streets with shops and some shopping centers.
A very good way to get to know Male is to rent a taxi for a few hours and ask the driver to give us a tour. Many of the taxis are comfortable cars and the maximum rates are regulated by the government so there is no danger of being ripped off. The maximum rate for a trip of 4 people or less from one point to another in the city is MRf15, for example, although luggage is charged separately MRf5 for each suitcase. And yes, there is a night rate that lasts until 6 in the morning.
The Maldives is one of the most popular tourist destinations in South Asia, even the world. There are many honeymoon tour packages specifically for people who want to spend their time in this beautiful country. One of them is Maldives Holidays. In the end, this country is completely different from the “something” that many people imagine about South Asian countries. Maldives is different. It is heaven! Hopefully this article is useful.
