Emma Roberts has worked on a long and varied string of different projects. The numerous television shows, movies and music videos to her name have displayed her multiple talents. However, some of these projects have been crucial in displaying her overall range. The following series and films are some of her most distinctive in her career.
- Unfabulous
Although Emma Roberts already participated in movies such as Blow and Grand Champion, she did not have a breakthrough role until starring in the 2004 Nickelodeon teen sitcom Unfabulous. Roberts stars as teenage girl Addie Singer, who copes with crushes and other middle school problems by writing and performing her songs. The role demonstrated her potential in a leading role and even started her music career. The show was a ratings success that spawned three seasons, a made-for-TV movie and a crossover special on Nickelodeon’s other hit comedy, Drake & Josh.
- Scream 4
After starring in multiple dramas and comedies, Roberts broke her genre trend by starring in 2011’s Scream 4. In the Wes Craven-directed horror movie, she plays Jill Roberts, the young cousin of the franchise’s long-suffering protagonist Sidney Prescott. The actress turns in a memorable performance as a horror leading lady, especially during the movie’s shocking twists and turns. It also opened the doors to similar projects such as American Horror Story and Scream Queens.
- We’re the Millers
A couple of years later, Emma Roberts appeared in the 2013 comedy We’re the Millers. In this movie, she plays Casey Mathis, a young runaway who joins a fake family as part of a scheme to smuggle drugs from Mexico. This is another genre shift as Roberts stars in a raunchy adult comedy, rather than the family-friendly comedic fare she was mostly known for. It was also an acting challenge for her as she played the role of straight man compared to her zany co-stars.
- American Horror Story
Starting in 2013, Roberts appeared in the horror television series American Horror Story. In her debut season, Coven, she plays Madison Montgomery, a narcissistic former teen actress and witchcraft student. The character became a fan-favorite due to the actress’s ability in portraying her as cruel and self-centered, but also likable and entertaining whenever she is on-screen. Roberts reprised the role in Apocalypse and stepped into different characters for Freak Show, Cult, 1984 and Delicate.
Emma Roberts’s career continues to grow throughout the years. While there is plenty of work ahead of her, there are specific past projects where she grew out of her comfort zone and evolved her skill set, leading to new acting opportunities.
